The EC regulation (1925/2006), which is intended to control voluntary addition of vitamins and minerals through a positive list, purity levels and minimum and maximum levels, was published in December 2006 and will be applicable across all member states from July 1 2007.
Its stated aim is to provide
- a higher level of consumer protection
- harmonise legislation across the EU to facilitate trade within the community and abide by the free movement of goods in the EU.
It will overrule any national legislation that prohibited
- fortification with minerals that do not occur naturally in the foodstuff.
- fortification above the "natural" mineral content
- fortification with minerals that were not on a national positive list .
