Monitoring the Nutraceutical or dietary supplements market is the EU Food Supplements Directive (FSD), effective August 2005. The directive is designed to assure E.U. consumers that the ingredients used in food supplements have been thoroughly assessed for safety. The law has established a "positive list" that includes 28 vitamins and minerals that are deemed safe.  Vitamins and minerals must be deemed safe to get on the "positive list". After August 1, 2005, E.U. stores can only sell supplement products with ingredients on the "positive list."
